- The Annual Perseverance Award
-
Bud and Anne Murphy honor their son yearly by presenting the 8th grade students at their local grammar school (St. Catharine's in Blauvelt, NY) with pictures and stories about Michael. They tell about how he was not a very good student and really struggled with school. But through perseverance he later went on to become a pilot in the United States Marine Corps and fly for the President of the United States (Pres. Clinton). Each student then writes an essay about what it means to persevere. The Murphy's then judge the essays picking 3 winners (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place) and present them with a bond in memory of their son. It is presented at the end of the school year in the school auditorium. They give a total of $500. In the hallway of the school hangs a plaque where the story is told of the men who died. On this plaque the names of the winners are engraved each year.

The Sweaney Memorial Football game
-
The Marine Corps JROTC at Lt. Col. Keith Sweaney's former high school has an annual football game in his honor. It is the last home game closest to Veterans Day at J.R. Tucker High School in Henrico County, Richmond, Va. They have established the "Excellence in Leadership" scholarship awards benefiting two students - one presented to a USMC JROTC cadet and one to a student not within the JROTC. It is based on their demonstrated superior leadership at the school. Keith was a Captain of both the football and wrestling teams at Tucker. The high school dedicates the game in Sweaney's honor. The Cadets themselves earn some of the money and the rest comes from donations made to the USMC ROTC Scholarship Fund at the school. They have done this every year since Sweaney's death. It is a large school and a nice remembrance for Keith Sweaney. The man in charge of the USMC ROTC is (retired) Major Larry Myers. He is also working with Sweaney's youngest brother to help raise funds for the Memorial.
